OVERVIEW

The Upward Bound Math and Science Center (UBMSC) is similar to the Classic Upward Bound Program. However, UBMSC is designed for students who are interested in mathematics, science, engineering or technology. Its aim is to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students.

PURPOSE

The goal of the program is to offer Omaha high school students an opportunity to study and explore topics in math- and science-related fields, which will prepare and encourage them to pursue a course of study in either math or science at a college or university.

Summer Bridge Program for Graduating Seniors

UBMSC is committed to academic excellence. Its summer bridge component reflects this goal. The Bridge Program allows graduating seniors the opportunity to take college courses for credit. The Bridge students will take a course at Creighton University that consists of math- or science-related coursework. The Summer Bridge component is only open to those participants who have completed high school and intend on enrolling in an institution of higher education in the following fall term.

ELIGIBILITY

To receive services, students must be a U.S. citizen and meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Potential first generation college student (neither parent nor the primary guardian has graduated from a four-year college with a baccalaureate degree).
  • Income-eligible individuals based on taxable family income.
  • Demonstrated need for academic support and services provided by the program.
  • Enrolled in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade and has successfully passed Algebra 1, and one science course (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) with a grade of C or higher.
  • Currently holds a 2.5, or higher, grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Summer Bridge Program:

  • Must be a graduating senior
  • Must hold a grade point average of 2.8 or better
  • Must have been accepted to a college or university
  • Must submit any copies of acceptance letters to colleges or universities
  • Must submit copies of scholarship award notification letters (if you receive any)
  • Must submit bridge program application on or before the specified deadline
  • A copy of final transcript for senior file

Student Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in the program until they graduate.
  • Attend Saturday Morning Classes.
  • Attend tutoring a minimum of two hours every week if required.
  • Attend a minimum of two cultural activities per semester.
  • Meet monthly with academic advisor.
  • Keep staff informed of academic progress with grade reports and standardized tests.
  • Participate in the summer academies.
  • Abide by the code of behavioral conduct.
  • Enroll in a college or university upon graduation.
  • Maintain communication with the program regarding progress in college.

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

  • Ensure fulfillment of all student responsibilities by their enrolled child.
  • Communicate regularly with Upward Bound staff regarding child’s progress.
  • Actively participate in the Parent Council and/or committees.
