Lennis Pederson declared a quorum and convened the meeting.

Minutes: The June 24, 2008 meeting minutes were accepted by Rich Rossi and seconded by Amy Matthews.

Amy Bones informed the Committee that the bill to enhance coverage of the current ADA law has passed the House of Representatives. There is not a schedule for the Senate to vote on the bill. One provision of the bill would add "thinking" and "concentrating" to the list of major life activities for which students with difficulties may request accommodations. The chief intent of the bill is that it will help combat discrimination, not guarantee that students or employees have certain accommodations. The ultimate goal of the bill is to restore and clarify ADA's original intent.

Lennis distributed a listing of work and purchases accomplished this past fiscal year by Purchasing and Facilities Management. The list did not contain maintenance and small improvements that came as a non-descript work order.

Discovery Day conversations were lead by Amy Matthews. The Committee agreed to changing the date to October 3, 2008, to give more time for planning. It also moved the event into ADA awareness month. Stephanie Kokesh will be stepping down as chair of SEN but SEN remains committed to the event.

Wade Pearson said that the number of students with declared needs for accommodation is about like last year. There is an increase in the number of hearing impaired, however.

Lennis informed the group that he and Wade were developing the subject matter for the Spring ADA Symposium. The current thinking is to talk about the bill to expand coverage of the ADA law. Other subjects to round out the event will be developed.

The new membership list for the Committee was distributed.

Wade did not have an update for the on-line training program.

Meeting adjourned at 11:40 AM.

The next meeting is scheduled for August 26, 2008 in the Swanson Hall South Conference Room.
