Minutes: The minutes from the May 26, 2009 meeting were approved by Laura Mann and seconded by Amy Bones

Amy Matthews will be refreshing the survey about the ADA Committee visibility on campus. The survey was utilized a few years ago to help define a subject for a symposium. The refreshed survey will be sent to the campus populace in the early part of the school year.

Lennis Pederson will confirm with the Health Sciences that the syllabus for each class has language informing the students of their obligation to disclose the need for assistance to overcome maladies protected by the ADA. Wade Pearson opined that the Vice President for Academic Affairs was enforcing the need for such language within the schools under his umbrella.

Laura Mann did not have an update for the Committee regarding the new ADA Committee brochure. She anticipates having a brochure available by the time of the June meeting.

The Committee viewed a short demonstration video prepared by Scott Grove. The video was prepared to help inspire physically handicapped individuals to make the most out of life by learning to cope with the disability. Lennis was asked to arrange a time for members of the Committee to view the full video. The though is that the video could become the foundation for the fall symposium.

Jeff Branstetter reported that his preliminary thinking for the September training session for the Committee members would be interactive. There are case law examples that can be used for consideration and the committee would be involved with deciding the case. Amy Bones has agreed to help Jeff find the training material.

Mark Panning and Kevin Mahler informed the committee that they are looking for topics to be submitted for grants. There was agreement that they would work with Amy Matthews to develop a grants writing program within the framework of a class she presets next semester to OT students. Mark will also work with Maria Jerrell to write grants for removal of physical barriers.

Lennis reminded the Committee of the study prepared by an architect in the past 2 or 3 years that listed architectural barriers on campus. A sub-committee will be established to help Mark , Kevin and Maria with their efforts.

Wade Pearson made the Committee aware of a new student this fall requiring significant accommodations because of the physical limitations. The student is supported full time with a nurse. There will be private bathroom needs, parking concerns, route clearance and likely many other considerations to satisfy. Wade expects to have more conversation with the student to ascertain the full list of needs.

The meeting adjourned at 11:50AM

The next meeting is June 30.
