Sustainability at Creighton
Welcome to our website. We are the Sustainability Council at Creighton University, made up of students, staff, and faculty under the leadership of Mary Duda. The goal of our organization is to bring effective sustainability strategies to Creighton University, integrating this important movement into what we teach, how we live and work at the University and extending this to our daily lives.
Our website provides information on current initiatives as well as future plans. This will include ongoing educational efforts in the colleges of the university as well as such mundane matters as recycling and energy use.
Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, asked that we seek the “magis,” the greater. Thus we are called to be more generous, more compassionate, more forgiving. When it comes to sustainability “magis” can also mean less- we can consume less and exploit resources less. This requires the generosity Ignatius asks of us – to share what we have equally with others now and in generations to come.
Sustainability includes grand schemes and small initiatives. There are endless possibilities -- walk from your residence hall, bike from home if you are able, car pool, turn off lights when finished in a classroom, explore sustainability through curriculum offerings, join our student organization, our faculty organization or this eclectic group. Read the material we provide electronically rather than print it out. On a grander scheme, advocate for continued sustainability on campus and encourage colleagues and friends to live fully, even with less, for others now and in the generations to come.
We invite you to explore our pages and join up with some of the many ongoing initiatives and organizations on campus that are focused on sustainability. We are limited only by our creativity and ability to work together to make sustainability a part of everyday life, our life, here at Creighton.
Sustainability at Creighton would not be where it is today without the leadership of Lennis Pederson, who founded the Sustainability Council and promoted sustainable practices as Director of Facilities Management and Associate Vice President of Administration. We wish him well in his retirement.
