Higher Learning Commission Assessment Academy

Accepted into the inaugural class of the Academy for the Assessment of Student Learning, Creighton University is committed to a four-year process (2006-2010) whereby we intentionally examine and assess our students' learning, sharing best practices within our Creighton community of teacher-scholars.  A final report was presented in November, 2010.

As noted by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Accreditation, The Academy for Assessment of Student Learning Commission's (HLC) member institutions a four-year sequence of events and interactions that are focused on student learning, targeted at accelerating and advancing efforts to assess and improve student learning, and designed to build institution-wide commitment to assessment of student learning. When planned comprehensively and carefully by the institution, successful participation in the Academy can: (1) produce evidence for Criteria and Core Components in upcoming accreditation evaluations; (2) serve in place of mandated progress reports, monitoring reports and focused visits on assessment of student learning (PEAQ); and (3) serve in place of one or more action projects (AQIP).

Admission to the Academy was based on a competitive review of applications from a variety of schools within the HLC's geographic region. As you will see from reading our application to the Academy, Creighton University is ambitiously pursuing authentic assessment of our values-imbued education as identified within a larger system of university-level outcomes, a system of peer review and best practices in assessment, and bridging curricular and co-curricular student learning and assessment.

Supported by Creighton's University Assessment Committee, representatives from all colleges and schools as well as the Divisions of Student Services and Information Technology, University Ministry, Core Curriculum, and Institutional Research are coordinating efforts to: (1) identify and assess common, university-level outcomes; (2) develop a peer review system that coordinates collection of assessment data and highlights best practices in the assessment of student learning.
