As the school year comes to an end, there are several useful bits of information you should have to keep you well informed throughout the summer months.

PERSONNEL
The University has been busy identifying and interviewing candidates for several significant administrative positions. I am very pleased to report that we have made significant progress in the identification and hiring in the following areas.

  • Maureen Waldron has been named the Acting Vice President for University Ministry while Fr. Andy Alexander is on a mini-sabbatical. Andy will return August 1.
  • Dr. Eleanor Howell has been named Dean of Nursing effective May 1. Dr. Howell had been Interim Dean for 2002-03.
  • Ms. Lisa Calvert is the newly designated Vice President for University Relations. She presently is the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. Lisa comes on board June 2.
  • Dr. J. Chris Bradberry, has been invited to be Dean of Pharmacy and Health Professions. Dr. Bradberry is currently Professor in the Departments of Pharmacy and Family Medicine, University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He will join Creighton in mid-summer.
  • I am also pleased to announce that Brian A. Young has been appointed Vice President for Information Technology. He is currently Vice President or Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He has had extensive experience at the University of Dayton prior to his move to New York. Brian will join us in early July.
  • The search for the Dean of Medicine and Vice President for Health Sciences is ongoing. The committee, chaired by Dr. Pat Kelsey, has several candidates yet to interview.

CONSTRUCTION

  • The Hixson-Lied Science Building will be dedicated on June 2 at 4:30 in the afternoon. You are all invited. The landscaping around the plaza will be underway shortly.
  • I am very pleased to announce that the plaza east of the science building will be named in memory of Lt. Col. Michael Anderson,’90. This is possible through the generosity of the Kiewit Companies Foundation. The Anderson Plaza will be dedicated on June 21 during Reunion Weekend.
  • Site preparation for the soccer venue and intramural fields is progressing well. It is anticipated that the field (not the stadium and facilities) will be completed by late August. Creighton’s soccer teams anticipate playing on a real "home" field in September.
  • Site preparation for the junior/senior town homes is progressing well. Construction should start in mid-summer. This project will occupy the site of the former Burt Tower. The architectural renderings are in the final stages of development.
  • You also may have noticed that west of the hospital (30th-to-32nd Streets between Webster and California Streets) the University has cleared nearly two blocks for expanded surface parking. The completion date for that project has yet to be determined.
  • Added feature to campus: Some of you may have seen the statue of "St. Joseph Teacher of the Young Jesus" which has been placed east of McGloin Residence Hall along the path to the softball field. The image is dedicated to the faculty and staff of the University. The inscription reads:

In gratitude to the Creighton educators
who for 125 years taught their students
to be women and men of conscience,
competency, and compassion.

ENROLLMENT
As of May 26, the undergraduate admissions scene looks very promising. We have 923 deposited freshmen and 65 deposited transfer students. This is 167 deposits or 20% ahead of last year at this time. Thank you Admissions and Financial Aid staff for a job well done! Enrollment in the professional schools looks quite positive as well! Watch this spot for future updates!

Enjoy the summer!
