Juniors
You might as well consider this the first official year of your college admissions process. This year you'll take the big tests (at least for the first time), look at colleges (virtually and in person) and try to narrow down some likely career options. Here's a few guidelines to help you this year:
Stay in school
The first and best guideline for this year is to keep up your classroom performance. You should be in challenging courses that will meet the admission requirements and prepare you for your college curriculum. You may be in AP classes, in which case succeeding in class also means having a shot at testing well in the spring.
Ace the tests
Tests begin in the fall with the PSAT and continue with the SAT, ACT, AP and CLEP tests. The PSAT enters you for National Merit Scholar recognition. Of course, the SAT and/or ACT are used by nearly every college or university in reviewing your application. If you want to get some credit from Creighton prior to your freshman year, you can take AP or CLEP tests in subjects you have taken.
Involve yourself
Keep up your interests in and out of school by participating in activities that interest you. If you can, take on leadership roles to learn more and stretch your skills. Not only will these experiences become the highlight of your time in high school, they will also help you stand out from other college applicants when it comes to admission and scholarships. So make sure to keep track of what you do and when.
Get a job
Maybe you want to put some money away for college, have a little extra spending money in high school or get some experience in the workplace. Whatever you do, consider finding something in the industry you're looking into for a career. If money is no object, consider an internship or volunteer work. While some internships pay, many don't. Most of them do provide hands-on "real world" experience that can make up for little or no pay. Interns and volunteers, too, can often get as involved as they want in a project, so be prepared to learn a lot.
See CU
Spend some time making sure that Creighton has what you're looking for. Request information and visit the website (like you're doing right now). Does it have the program (or programs) you are considering? How about the extracurricular activities you want to do? Then, see it for yourself. In person. We've got CU Sunday if you want a weekend visit or JayDays if want to come when class is in session. Otherwise, schedule an individual visit with Admissions. And while in town, be sure to spend a little time in Omaha to get a feel for the city, too. If you live too far to make the visit, be sure to meet up with CU at a nearby reception, high school visit or college fair.
