Sophomore
It's not too early to begin planning for college. But it's early enough that you shouldn't be stressing out about it, either. The most important thing at this point is your success in high school, both in and out of class. Here are a few guidelines for what you should be considering as you go through your sophomore year.
In School
Classes
Creighton, like many other universities, will look at not only how well you did in class but also the kind of classes you took. Check out Creighton's Admissions Requirements as you plan your classes for this and the following years. Consider that college prep classes will not only look better on your college application but will also better prepare you for college classes.
Activities
Explore your interests and talents, seeking out any opportunities for leadership. Universities look for students with rich experiences outside of class, whether these be on the field, behind an editor's desk or on stage. Rather than getting involved in everything, choose activities that you are truly interested in and will devote your time to.
Guidance Counselor
Introduce yourself (if you haven't met) and meet to talk about 1) classes that you would like to take next year as a junior and 2) the college placement tests that will be coming up and 3) programs and schools that you might be interested in, asking about other programs or schools that you may not know about.
Outside of school
Activities
Do you want to volunteer some of your time? Or get involved in a community organization? Maybe take music, dance or other lessons? Whether you want to develop your skills or just donate some time and energy, you'll be putting your time to good use. You'll may also be helping your community in the process. In either case, these kinds of activities not only fit on a college application, they might also make you eligible for scholarships.
Job/Internship
You may be working during the school year or only during the summer. If possible, try to find work or an internship in an industry or area that you are interested in pursuing in college. Perform well in your position, as you may want to keep the job, come back the next summer or eventually ask your supervisor for a recommendation.
