Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Leadership Program is a cross-institutional initiative that seeks to support the development of scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) by:
- fostering inquiry and leadership for the improvement of student learning,
- developing and synthesizing knowledge about learning and teaching, and
- promoting institutional change in support of a scholarship of teaching and learning.
Universities desiring to participate in CASTL are competitively selected by the Carnegie Foundation and grouped into clusters according to areas of focus. Creighton University has been selected to participate in two clusters:
- Mentoring Newer Scholars of Teaching and Learning, and
- Cognitive-Affective Connections in Teaching and Learning
Mentoring Newer Scholars of Teaching and Learning
This cluster is led by Rockhurst University, and co-led by Columbia College Chicago and Creighton University. Other schools who participate in our cluster include Morehead State University, University of Houston-Clear Lake, and Truman State University. This cluster is in its fourth year of operation. Our signature event is the annual CASTL Summer Institute. This institute is designed for college teachers who are eager to open their classroom doors in order to exchange, test, enrich, and document their pedagogical practices with other committed educators. Creighton University will host the institute in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Cognitive-Affective Connections in Teaching and Learning
This cluster is led by Oxford College of Emory University. Other schools who participate in our cluster with us include Kennesaw State University, Saint Martin's University, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of the Pacific, and the University of Portland.The goal of this cluster is to investigate the affective side of student learning and its relationship to cognitive development, including (but not limited to) aesthetic, ethical, and moral education. Creighton University is new to the cluster this year. To better understand our goals for participating in this effort, read our CASTL application. Led by Amy Haddad, the cluster team also includes Tracy Chapman, Linda Gabriel, Gail Jensen, Katie Huggett and Mary Ann Danielson.
