Capstone Far Out Fables

The Boy Who Cried Vampire by Benjamin Harper and Alex Lopez

2018 The Boy Who Cried Vampire.  Benjamin Harper.  Illustrated by Alex Lopez.  Paperbound.  North Mankato, MN: Far Out Fables:  Capstone: Stone Arch Books.  $6.69 from Wordery, through Ebay, Dec., '18.

The back cover declares "Classic fables get twisted about and turned inside out in this series of full-color comic books for kids!"  The vampire in this rendition is "Grigore the Dreaded."  The boy Ion likes to play pranks and make up wild stories – or otherwise, to watch scary movies.  Ion cries out to the people of the village that "Grigore the Vampire is after me!"  When people show up, Ion tells them that it was a drill.  His parents ground Ion for a month.  Ion tries a wounding story including ketchup.  "Ion, you are beyond lame.  I mean, ketchup?"  Ion is grounded by his parents "until he is 35"!  Grigore then actually appears and comes after Ion.  Grigore then reveals to Ion that he drinks only "totally organic beet juice."  He does not want blood; he wants to hang out.  This story ends rather open-ended.  Is Grigore what he says he is?

The invaders from Zurg sweep down on the earth.  Thunder the Lion leads the resistance to overthrow the Zurg leader, Kromar.  Daisy the mouse leaves her home village far from the fighting to join the insurgency.  Daisy finds Thunder and volunteers, only to be laughed at.  Dismissed, Daisy vows to return in Thunder's darkest hour.  Kromar in a surprise attack wounds Thunder.  Daisy frees Thunder and gets him to their new base.  Daisy has a plan: Zurg are not good around cats.  They get sniffly.  They overcome the Zurg, who flee.  Together Thunder and Daisy seek to rebuild their world.

The Robo-battle of Mega Tortoise vs Hazard Hare by Stephanie Peters and Fern Cano

2018 The Robo-Battle of Mega Tortoise vs. Hazard Hare: A Graphic Novel.  Stephanie Peters.  Illustrated by Fernando Cano.  Paperbound.  North Mankato, MN: Far Out Fables:  Capstone: Stone Arch Books.  $6.55 from Wordery, through Ebay, Sept., '18.

The back cover declares "Classic fables get twisted about and turned inside out in this series of full-color comic books for kids!"  A battle of robots is the featured event at an annual festival.  Hunter the Hare wins the big competition every year, and Shelly the Tortoise always comes in last.  Shelly builds an anti-hare robot, but Hunter steals it.  Shelly then creates a mega-tortoise robot.  With it, she can attack the nuts and bolts of Hunter's stolen robot.  Slow and steady wins this battle too.  The booklet goes on to present the traditional fable and relate it to this story.  Good active colored comic panels!  I just ordered a third of the four in the series, "The Boy Who Cried Vampire."

2021 The Goose That Laid the Rotten Egg.  Steve Foxe.  Illustrated by Fern Cano.  Paperbound.  North Mankato, MN: Far Out Fables: Capstone: Stone Arch Books.  $7.97 from go-dealz through Ebay, Nov., '21.

The back cover declares "Classic fables get twisted about and turned inside out in this series of full-color comic books for kids!"  This adaptation of GGE ends up morally uplifting.  Chad and Valeria are cousins living in the filthy rich Worthington family mansion.  His drone crashes with a goose, and Valeria saves the goose, who happens to produce golden eggs.  When the family learns that she is harvesting golden eggs for her college fund, they want to make this goose into an investment for the family, already filthy rich.  Petunia the goose produces for them only stinky rotten eggs.  She already had a proclivity to break wind and people found the fumes noxious!  When it comes to a showdown, Petunia spoils the whole mansion with a barrage of rotten stinky eggs, and the family departs to their summer home.  Thenceforth, Petunia's flock enjoys the hospitality of the luxurious Worthington home.  At the end of the book, the traditional tale is told, and there is a careful analysis of the divergences from the traditional fable.

2021The Wolf in Unicorn's Clothing.  Katie Schenkel.  Illustrated by Jimena S. Sanchez.  Paperbound.  North Mankato, MN: Far Out Fables: Capstone: Stone Arch Books.  $11.90 from Amazon, Nov., '21.

The back cover declares "Classic fables get twisted about and turned inside out in this series of full-color comic books for kids!"  This adaptation of WSC ends up morally uplifting.  As the book itself describes, "A young wolf named Daisy wants to be friends with unicorns.  But she's sure the majestic creatures would never want to hang out with a mangy wolf.  So she's using her amazing knitting skills to create a unicorn disguise!  Will she be able to sneak into the herd, and will she ever be able to revel her true self?"  The book's answer to these questions is an emphatic "Yes!"

2021 Punk Rock Mouse and Country Mouse.  Brandon Terrell.  Illustrated by Alex Lopez.  Pamphlet.  North Mankato, MN: Far Out Fables: Capstone: Stone Arch Books.  $5.95 from Amazon, Nov., '21.

The back cover declares "Classic fables get twisted about and turned inside out in this series of full-color comic books for kids!"  Here is an engaging adaptation of TMCM.  Two singing mice in very different worlds exchange roles after a "battle of the bands."  Each gets a day in the other's world.  The thrill of the city and the quiet of the country wear off for them, respectively, and they want to get back to their old lives.  They end up singing together at the next night's celebration.  The musical moral that they sing is "Be yourself!  Everyone else is taken!"
