2010 The Lion, the Cock and the Ass (Chinese). Aesop. Pattheera Chantarasarojana. Paperbound. Taiwan: Aesopic Fables #1 of 12: Human Cultural Enterprise Co. $5 from Jeremy Weiss, Sleepy Hollow, NY, through eBay, March, '12.

This is a very pleasing series of twelve 12-page pamphlets of unusual proportions, namely just under 10 inches square. The two-page spreads here are dramatic, from the lying spying both cock and ass across the river, to both bellowing, to the lion slinking away, to the ass braying while in pursuit, to the lion overwhelming the ass. The last picture tellingly shows the cock perched on the ass's bare rib-cage bones. Well done to both Pattheera Chantarasarojana and to the publishers of such a fine fable book! First published in Thailand in 2007 by Class Publishing House, Bangkok.

2010 The Hawk and the Crow (Chinese). Aesop. Illustrated by Chunpen Pongnivat. Paperbound. Taiwan: Aesopic Fables #7 of 12: Human Cultural Enterprise Co.. $5 from Jeremy Weiss, Sleepy Hollow, NY, through eBay, March, '12.

This is a very pleasing series of twelve 12-page pamphlets of unusual proportions, namely just under 10 inches square. The two-page spreads here are again dramatic, from the time that the crow sees the hawk swoop down upon and then carry away a small lamb. When the crow tries to do the same, the central illustration shows him sweating as his claws are entangled in the wool on the lamb's back. In the next picture, the shepherd is clipping off feathers and then giving him to his son. The very last picture is especially well done: the crow sits on a perch with its clipped wings and a rope tied to one of its legs. The crow is weeping. Well done to both Chunpen Pongnivat and to the publishers of such a fine fable book! First published in Thailand in 2007 by Class Publishing House, Bangkok.

2010 The Frogs Begging for a King (Chinese). Aesop. Illustrated by Lanthom Nammontree. Paperbound. Taiwan: Aesopic Fables #10 of 12: Human Cultural Enterprise Co. $5 from Jeremy Weiss, Sleepy Hollow, NY, through eBay, March, '12.

This is a very pleasing series of twelve 12-page pamphlets of unusual proportions, namely just under 10 inches square. Lively expressiveness is the characteristic of this book and its art. A reader may not know what those frogs are so excited about on the first page, but their intense prayer is clear in the next illustration, as is their panic as a log comes crashing into their pond in the following illustration. In the next illustration several of the frogs are beating and kicking the log and tearing off a part of its branches. In the foreground one frog prays.. Every frog is on the alert in the next illustration, as a crane arrives at the pond. Soon enough he has one of the helpless frogs in his bill, and the others are terrified. The last picture is nicely suggestive: the crane flies away from what looks like a frogless pond. Well done to both Lanthom Nammontree and to the publishers of such a fine fable book! First published in Thailand in 2007 by Class Publishing House, Bangkok.
