Three fables are included in this beginning reader: GA (62), BW (106), and FG (114). Several colored illustrations and many black-and-white throughout, some charming and some (like those of children's faces) grotesque.

1897 School Reading by Grades: Second Year. By James Baldwin. Hardbound. NY: School Reading by Grades: American Book Company. $10 from Beck's Antiques & Books, Fredericksburg, VA, Dec., '98. Extra copies for $2.50 from the Book House, Minneapolis, Nov., '92 and for $5 from Atlanta Vintage Books, April, '94

Two fables are included in this reader: TH (46) and "Androclus" (84). There are two small illustrations for the former and two large for the latter. The good copy has the code "E.P. 5" on the back of the title-page, while the extra copies have "W.P. 46" and "W.P. 83," respectively. The Atlanta copy in particular has seen some wear. The last two or three pages of the Minneapolis copy seem to have been lost. This reader is of course a part of a set of eight.

There are four fables in this reader. MSA (10) is well told and features a good black-and-white illustration of the donkey swinging crosswise from a pole. TMCM (42) is told in a version very close to Jacobs' and offers nice but small illustrations. "King Tawny Mane" (92) is the eastern fable of the lion and rabbit, complete with the well into which the lion jumps. "The Hare with Many Friends" (150) is also included, with one image. The good cop has "E.P. 3" on the back of the title-page, while the three extra copies have different "W.P." numbers there (36, 70, and 77). This reader is of course a part of a set of eight.
