Chronicles & Shadows

Originally begun in 1909 as The Creighton Chronicle, the publication known today as Shadows has been a publication with many purposes. It served as the Creighton University news source until the emergence of the Creighton Courier newspaper in 1912. It was a place for students and professors to publish articles on their studies, opinions, and works in poetry and fiction. In 1922, the year the Creightonian began publishing, the name was changed to Shadows and the magazine was dubbed the “Activities and Literary Magazine of Creighton University.” Shadows continued to publish content regarding opinions and studies of the students, and focused less on the happenings of campus over time, limiting the number of publications a year. In 1932 the name changed again to The Creighton Quarterly Shadows, and the publications were limited to 4 times in a school year, with more literary content and less opinion and editorial. Today, Shadows is a student-run literary magazine that publishes about once a semester and incorporates artwork as well as literary work.

Copies of most of the published Creighton Chronicles and Shadows are available in the University Archives. The publications were interrupted by an intermission after May of 1941 and resumed in spring of 1963. The volumes up to 1941 have been digitized by the University Archives and are available online for students to view.

Project Support and Development

The print portions of the Creighton Chronicles and Shadows were digitized and placed online in 2012 by Internet Archive, a San Francisco-based non-profit that is building an internet library of historical collections in digital format. Funding was provided by Creighton University's Reinert-Alumni Memorial Library.
