Lent 2020

Creighton University experts speak on the sacred text and art of
The Saint John's Bible in a new series, Lighting the Word.

With our Sermon Project, we work with clergy across the Omaha metropolitan region to bring our Heritage Edition of The Saint John's Bible to local places of worship.

Our A Light for Justice video series is an alternative to an in-person series planned in partnership with the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice for this Lenten season. A team of students, led by Alyssa Beasley of the Schlegel Center, selected illuminations from the Heritage Edition of The Saint Johnís Bible as starting points for discussions, education and opportunities related to justice topics.  We had the first two sessions, and then the coronavirus caused us to change course. The videos below are a modest attempt to continue the program in a virtual form. We are grateful to share them with you.

Video 1 - Introduction and Migration   ē   Video 2 - Homelessness   ē   Video 3 - Racism and Criminal Justice   ē
Video 4 - Human Trafficking   ē   Video 5 - Environmental Justice

Thank you to the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice for partnering with us for this program; to Mike and Nancy McCarthy for the loan of the Heritage Edition of The Saint John's Bible; to The Saint John's Bible organization for permitting us to use video clips of illuminations; and to Malaz Ebrahim and Ellie Goecken for their assistance with the video.

Valley of the Dry Bones, was selected for the themes of racism and criminal justice. In this illumination, Donald Jackson presents scenes of 20th-century atrocities with a reminder that, even among the desolation, God is there.

The Schlegel Center for Service and Justice connects racial justice with the work of Fr. Markoe and DePorres Club, an important part of our university's heritage.
