2009 Speaker Bios

Mr. Alvaro Tafur Contri, VP of Private Wealth Management, Goldman Sachs

Alvaro Tafur joined Goldman Sachs’ London office in 1992. A native of Madrid, he was responsible for starting the Private Wealth Management business in the Iberian Peninsula. While working in London, he completed the three year Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program. After successfully building the Iberian business, Alvaro relocated to Miami in 1997. Since his arrival in Miami he has focused on growing the Private Wealth Management franchise in Latin America and the Florida Peninsula. His team currently supervises $1.3 billion in client assets.

Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Alvaro attended graduate school at Yale University where he received Masters degrees in Public and Private Management and in International Relations. He has worked for the consulting firm of Booz Allen & Hamilton in Madrid and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC. Alvaro attended Creighton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.

Alvaro is involved in Miami’s cultural and educational community. He is a member of the Miami Art Museum (MAM) collectors’ council, the investment committee for the endowment of Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, and of the St. Philips Church and School Foundation.

He is a resident of Coral Gables where he lives with his wife Julia and their two sons, Alejandro & Harrison.

Kenneth E. Stinson, Chairman of the Board, Kiewit

Kenneth E. Stinson is Chairman of the Board of Peter Kiewit Sons’, Inc. Kiewit is the nation’s 5th largest general contractor and also has significant contracting operations in Canada. It is also engaged in the coal mining and offshore businesses. It had 2008 revenues of more than $8 billion.

Ken received his degree in Civil Engineering in 1964 from the University of Notre Dame. He served in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineering Corps from 1966 to 1969, becoming a Company Commander of an MCB5 Seabee Battalion and served 2½ tours in Vietnam. After completing his military service, he returned to school and received his masters in Civil Engineering from Stanford University in 1970.

Ken served as a summer intern on a Bay Area Rapid Transit project in 1969 and joined Kiewit full time in 1970. He worked on a number of notable projects as an Engineer, Superintendent and Project Manager including the 63rd Street Tube and Tunnel in New York City, the Pasco-Kennewick Bridge in Central Washington State, the I-205 Bridge in Portland, Oregon, and the Ft. McHenry Traffic Tube in Baltimore, Maryland.

Ken moved to Omaha headquarters in 1982 to serve as Vice President of Marketing. He was named President of Kiewit Eastern Co. in 1986, with responsibility for construction operations east of the Mississippi plus nationwide responsibility for Kiewit’s power and process contracting. In 1989, he was given added responsibility for Kiewit’s underground construction operations and also named President of Kiewit Mining Group Inc., responsible for all of Kiewit’s coal mining operations.

Ken was named President of Kiewit Construction Group in 1992 and Chairman and CEO in 1993, with executive responsibility for all of Kiewit’s construction, mining and construction materials businesses. He was named Chairman and CEO of the parent company, Peter Kiewit Sons’, Inc., in 1998. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board. He also serves as a director of Valmont Industries, ConAgra Foods, Inc. and McCarthy Group, LLC.

Ken is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, the National Academy of Construction, the National Academy of Engineering, the Moles, the Beavers, and is a former chairman of the Construction Industry Round Table. He is director/trustee of a number of civic and charitable organizations including the University of Notre Dame, Stratcom Consultation Committee, the Nebraska Behavioral Health Support Foundation and the Mid-America Council B.S.A.

Ken is the recipient of numerous awards from engineering, civic and charitable organizations. He and Ann have four sons, two daughters, and five grandchildren in their combined family.
