Sportsmanship

Welcome! Today is November 22, 2009.

Good sportsmanship is essential to every game.  The team captain is responsible for the actions of all team members, coaches, and for all spectators directly related to the team before, and after the game.

SPIRIT OF THE RULES---The purpose of the Intramural Sports to provide social opportunities, develops qualities of leadership, communication, cooperation, and a sense of fair play. Intramurals are a great way to form lifelong friendships.  Participation in the Intramural Program can provide many personal benefits and add to a successful college experience.  Winning and losing games are also part of this experience.  Abusive language, poor attitude, retaliation, intimidation, taunting, fighting, non compliance, non cooperation, and attempting to exploit the rules to win are not part of a game and this program.  Respecting your opponent and game staff is vital for the success of the Intramural program.  Without the officials and your opponent there is no game which results in NO FUN!  Any intention violation of the rules no matter how small is considered cheating and is directly opposed to the idea of the “Spirit of the Rules”.  All players are expected to play within this context.

SPORTSMANSHIP RATING SYSTEM---The development of sportsmanship is of a fundamental importance in all IM Sports activities.  The Sportsmanship Rating system is intended to be an objective scale by which a teams’ attitude and behavior may be assessed through the season.  All behavior before during and after an intramural contest is included in this rating.  The Team Captain is responsible for informing all affiliation (i.e. players, coaches, and fans).  To encourage acceptable conduct during an intramural contest, game staff (Officials and Supervisors) shall make decisions to warn, penalize, sit down, or eject players for poor sportsmanship.  They also may end the game due to poor team or spectator sportsmanship.

RATINGS----EXCEPTIONAL, ACCEPTABLE, AND  UNACCEPTABLE

1.       EXCEPTIONAL—players cooperate well with IM staff/opponent and will discuss differences over rule interpretations calmly.  The captain has full control over team and spectators.

2.       ACCEPTABLE---players may complain about calls/comments may warrant a team warning.  The captain has some control but is not in charge.

3.       UNACCEPTABLE ---players are constantly talking about calls or opposing team. Team is uncooperative with the administration of the event.  The team has little or no control over team or spectators.  The supervisor has to end the game due to unsportsmanlike acts

If a team receives an Unacceptable rating, the team captain must meet with the Associate Director prior to the next game.  If a team receives two Unacceptable ratings during the season, the team will be dropped. Teams involved in a fight will automatically receive two Unacceptable ratings.

UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT AND EJECTION POLICY

Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.  First and foremost every individual that participates or is a spectator is responsible for their own behavior.  Every intramural participant is expected to behave in a manner that respects and promotes the dignity of all persons.  Any conduct that is demeaning or harmful to another person will result in player ejections and team forfeits.   Game officials/IM supervisors are empowered to end games if individual player, spectator, and coach’s safety is in question.  Teams will also be penalized for unsportsmanlike acts committed by their players, bench personnel, and/or fans.   Any team that commits multiple unsportsmanlike conduct infractions during the season/play-offs will be dropped from the program.  An ejected player will sit out a minimum of one game and must meet with the Associate Director before he/she is eligible for further competition.

It is the participant’s responsibility to schedule an appointment with the Associate Director to review his/her behavior and subsequent eligibility to participate in any Intramural Sports activities. Participant suspensions are effective after the meeting with the Associate Director or his designee (i.e., no self-imposed penalties). Associate Director’s decision may be appealed to the Director of Campus Recreation; however, suspensions remain in force during the appeal process.  NOTE: REPORTS OF FIGHTING, THREATENING BEHAVIOR, OR VIOLATIONS OF CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY CODE OF CONDUCT WILL BE FORWARD TO THE OFFICE OF STUDENT INTEGRETY.
