Computer based test (General Test only) offered year round in many Sylvan Learning Center locations. The GRE General Test measures three areas: Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical writing. The paper and pencil test is given in multiple sections.  There is also the possibility of an experiment section which does not count towards your overall score. The computer-based test has one 30-minute section for Verbal, one 45-minute section for Quantitative, and one 75-minute section for Analytical Writing .

There is also the possibility of an “Unidentified Pretest Section”, which tests questions for possible future use (you are not told which section this is), and an “Identified Research Section” for the purposes of researching a new section or questions.

Verbal Ability
The Verbal Ability sections are designed to test the ability to reason with words in solving problems.  The sections consist of four types of questions: analogies, antonyms, sentence completions, and reading comprehension.

Quantitative Ability
The Quantitative Ability sections are designed to measure basic mathematical skills, understanding of elementary mathematical concepts, and the abilities to reason quantitatively and to solve problems in a quantitative setting.  It
measures math knowledge usually taught in high school and basic college courses.  The section consists of questions related to four broad content areas: arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.

Analytical Writing
The Analytical Writing sections consist of two tasks. The first requires the writer to construct an argument about an issue, and the second requires a critique of someone else’s argument by assessing its claims.

Scoring
The GRE gives you three scores, one for each section.  These verbal and quantitative scores range from 200 to 800.  The Analytical Writing score ranges from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. While there is not specific minimum scores graduate programs look for, most are usually looking for consistently high scores across all three sections.
