Encuentro Dominicano

Director: Mary Bean
Campus Co-Coordinators: Dr. Eugene Selk (Dept. of Philosophy) and Dr. Jill Brown (Dept. of Psychology)

The Encuentro Dominicano ( ED ) is an academic, living-learning program integrating community-based learning in a cross-cultural immersion context. It is a collaborative response by the Creighton College of Arts & Sciences,Office of International Programs, and the Division of Student Life.  Encuentro Dominicano originated from over 30 years of involvement with the Dominican Republic through Creighton's Institute of Latin American Concern (ILAC). Core components of this program are:

  • Four months in the Dominican Republic at the ILAC Center (Institute for Latin American Concern).
  • An orientation week, 2 weekend retreats throughout the semester, and re-entry retreat for students to process and constructively reflect on their experiences.
  • A flexible curriculum designed to allow students to fulfill many CORE courses.
  • A service-site corresponding to your academic interests whether that is in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, or Nursing.
  • Two ten-day immersions where you will live with a Dominican family and experience their reality.
  • Weekend guided tours as an extension of the classroom learning to better understand the history, sociology, and economics of the Dominican Republic.
