About the Nanjing Arts Institute

Located near the Qinhuai River in the historical city of Nanjing (Jiangsu province, China), Nanjing Arts Institute (NAI) is the only comprehensive arts institute in Jiangsu Province with the widest range of disciplines and education levels, strongest teaching faculty and most advanced teaching facilities. It was the earliest art academy established in China (1912) whose great influence today can be found both in China and around the world.

Academics:
Covering an area of over 720 acres, Nanjing Arts Institute has over 10,000 students, including over 8,000 undergraduates, master′s degree candidates, doctoral candidates, international students and adult learners, and over 1,000 faculty. NAI currently consists of 12 colleges, including the College of Fine Arts, Music, Design, Media, Movie and Television, Dance, Popular Music, and Humanities, and it has 24 majors, including fine arts studies, painting, sculpture, art and design studies, design, industrial design, costume design, animation, photography, musicology, music performing, composing and related theories, choreography, dance, performing arts, literature of drama and film, art education, management of public utilities, recording, broadcasting and anchoring, directing/editing in radio and television, video design, directing, and  mass communication.

NAI also has research institutions including the Archaeological and Fine Arts Research Center, Music Research Center, Art Education Research Center, and Art Research Center. Its school motto is “Seeking truth, having innovative spirit, and pursuing perfection” and it is focused on a “student-oriented education, and talent-based development.”

Spotlight on the Music College:
The Music College of Nanjing Arts Institute is one of the earliest educational institutions to provide higher education in music. There are over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 100 full time teachers in the college and its majors include: musicology, music composing and its theories (including directing), performance (including performance of Chinese instruments, performance of orchestral and percussion instrument, performance of keyboard instrument, vocal music performance), and music education. Thousands of papers produced by the college, translations, and theses have been published in core journals of Jiangsu province and in China and more than 60 musical pieces have been published for performances or exhibitions in the country, provinces and ministries.

Spotlight on the Design College:
Since 1920, Nanjing Arts Institute has offered design courses to students. Presently, the college of design has 2,000 undergraduate students, master’s degree candidates, and doctoral candidates. The Design College has 12 majors including : Design (Vision Communication, Decorative Design, Environmental Design, Exhibition Design, Lacquer Carving Design, Jewelry Design, Textile Design, Pottery Design) Industrial Design Dress Design (Dress Design, Dress Presentation) and Design Theory. With over 80 full-time faculty, the Design College covers an area of 5,500 square meters and includes a library, exhibition rooms, darkrooms, multimedia lecture rooms, classrooms and other rooms for professional training. There are also ceramic art studios, product model studios, and clothing technology workrooms.

Over the past 10 years, teachers in the Design College have been to Europe, Asia, America, and some other countries and regions for academic visits, and we have frequent exchanges with foreign universities, such as British Royal Academy of Art and Birmingham Institute of Design and a research studio in Paris, France.
