Program Goals

A.  The student will acquire a broad understanding of human growth and development including the psychological and sociological, and physiological perspectives.

B.  The student will acquire a broad understanding of social and cultural issues.  This will include ethnic and gender differences  and other differing cultural life-styles.

C.  The student will acquire an understanding of the helping relationship which includes its philosophic base, counseling theory, consultation theory, and counselor/client self-awareness.  This will require an extended period of supervised internship.

D.  The student will acquire a working knowledge of groups and of the use of groups in the practice of counseling.

E.  The student will acquire an understanding of life-style and career development theory as well as strategies for assisting persons with life-choice issues.

F.  The student will acquire skills and competence in the appraisal of the individual.  This necessitates the development of a model for understanding of the individual and the acquisition strategies for gathering information about the individuals. 

G.  The student will acquire a knowledge of research and evaluation in counseling.  This will include statistics and research design.

H.  The student will acquire a professional orientation to counseling with knowledge of professional organizations and professional ethics.
