Biography

Dr. Erin Walcek Averett, Ph.D.

Erin Walcek Averett graduated with a B.A. in Latin and Classical Archaeology and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Georgia in 1998.  She earned her Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia in the Department of Art History and Archaeology in 2007.  She specializes in early Greek art and archaeology, focusing on terracotta figurines in the Geometric and Archaic periods in the Eastern Mediterranean.  Other areas of interest include the art and archaeology of Greece and Cyprus, Greek religion, and points of contact between the Near East and the Aegean.  Dr. Averett has excavated in Greece and Cyprus and is currently the Assistant Director of the Athienou Archaeological Project in central Cyprus.  She recently published a chapter "The Ritual Context of the Malloura Figurines" in Crossroads and Boundaries: The Archaeology of Past and Present in the Malloura Valley, Cyprus, edited by M.K. Toumazou, P.N. Kardulias, and D.B. Counts. She is currently working on the publication monograph of the terracotta figurines dedicated at the rural sanctuary at Athienou-Malloura on Cyprus.  Before coming to Creighton, Dr. Averett taught at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.  She also served as the Assistant Curator of Ancient Art at the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia.  Dr. Averett has traveled throughout the Mediterranean and was a fellow of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in Greece from 2002-2004.
