Dr. Matthew Knox Averett

Matthew Knox Averett earned his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri in the Department of Art History and Archaeology.  He specializes in Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture, focusing on Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the artistic patronage of Pope Urban VIII, and the urban development of Rome in the seventeenth century. Dr. Averett teaches a range of classes from Michelangelo to modern urban theory.

Dr. Averett's article on Rome's Triton Fountain, "'Redditus orbit erat': The Political Rhetoric of Bernini's Fountains in the Piazza Barberini" will appear in The Sixteenth Century Journal in 2014.   His article "The Annual Medals of Pope Urban VIII" is expected in the American Journal of Numismatics in 2013.  Dr. Averett's review of Genevieve Warwick's Bernini: Art and Theater is forthcoming in  Other recent publications include "Becoming Giorgio Cornaro: Titian's Portrait of a Man with a Falcon," in the Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte (2011), an article on the Joslyn Art Museum's Titian.  Dr. Averett is continuing work on a monograph on Bernini and the artistic patronage of the Barberini family.

Dr. Averett has traveled extensively in North America and Europe, and has conducted research at the American Academy in Rome, studied at the Goethe Institut in Rothenburg, Germany, and participated in the Athienou Archaeological Project in Cyprus.
