HIS 400: Research Methods in History: Historical Biography

This section of HIS 400 will focus on biography as a means of recording and retelling history. We shall study how various genre of biography, such as the traditional “life and times” biography, autobiography, psychobiography, popular biography, and film biography, attempt to present “the truth” about a person’s life story. The major requirement of this course will be the completion of a research project on an aspect of a historic individual’s life. Students will develop the skills involved in historical research, including the development of a thesis, the collection and analysis of materials, and the technical aspects of paper writing.
