Special Programs:
On Saturday night, September 13, from 7:00pm to 11:00pm, there will be a reception at the Lied Art Gallery at Creighton University for the photographic exhibit, “The Last Jews of Radauti (Romania),” photographs by Laurence Salzmann. Creighton shuttle buses will run between the Sheraton Hotel and Creighton University from 8:00pm and 11:00pm.
“My Grandparents’ Belarus: Journey Through a World Abandoned,” photographs by Joshua Eli Plaut, will be on display in the gallery at the Omaha Jewish Community Center. A reception will be held at the Jewish Community Center on Sunday, September 14, from 5:00pm to 6:00pm.

The Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization was established in 1988, the centennial year of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. The chair was established to provide an outstanding program in Jewish civilization with educational and cultural enrichment for Omaha’s Jewish community. Philip M. Klutznick, who with his wife, Ethel, established the Klutznick Chair, graduated from the Creighton University School of Law in 1930. Considered a world leader in Jewish affairs, Mr. Klutznick served on Creighton’s first board of directors, received an honorary Doctorate of Law from Creighton in 1956, and was awarded Creighton’s highest honor, the Manresa Medal, in 1979. Mr. Klutznick died in 1999; his generous legacy continues in the activities of the Chair and annual symposium. Dr. Leonard J. Greenspoon, professor of classics and near Eastern studies and theology, has held the Klutznick Chair since 1995.
The Norman & Bernice Harris Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was founded in 1991 with the aims of educating the people of the Great Plains region about Jewish civilization and the nature and history of anti-Semitism as well as of promoting understanding between Jews and non-Jews. Since its inception, it has become a vibrant center of academic activity and public programming, offering some twenty courses in the fields of history, literature, philosophy and religious studies, psychology, and political science. Public lectures, such as the annual Krivosha and Wald lectures, regularly attract large audiences and deal with such topics as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish-Christian dialogue, and problems of social discrimination. Dr. Gerald Shapiro, professor of English, currently serves as director; Dr. Jean Axelrad Cahan was director during the first symposium held jointly with Creighton.
The Creighton Center for the Study of Religion and Society, established in 1988, exists to promote scholarly activity in the form of research, publication, conferences, seminars, symposia, fora, and lectures. Its primary audience is the academic community, but its scholarship is available to all who seek it. Although Creighton University is a Jesuit Catholic university, the Center is not limited to any particular faith, time, or place. It encourages the study of all religious groups and beliefs among the various people of the world, past and present, in order to encompass the diversity of interest in the field and to encourage the widest possible comparative perspective. The Center director is Dr. Ronald A. Simkins, associate professor of theology and classical and near eastern studies.
The Midwest Jewish Studies Association (MJSA) is a broad and interdisciplinary non-profit organization. It brings together scholars of Jewish and non-Jewish background in a synergistic effort to generate energy, talent, ideas and resources. The MJSA is designed to facilitate scholarship and pedagogy and offer other valuable resources and services for individuals involved in Jewish Studies at the college and university levels. The MJSA holds an annual conference at different colleges and universities around the Midwest. Dr. Dean Bell, Spertus College, is MJSA president.
The Samuel Rosenthal Center for Judaic Studies was founded at Case Western Reserve University through an endowment grant from the Samuel Rosenthal Foundation. It was established in 1996 to broaden the scope of CWRU’s Jewish Studies curriculum and to strengthen interest in Judaic Studies on campus and throughout the local, national, and international communities. To this end, the Center supports a variety of initiatives, including visiting professorships, guest lectures, student scholarships and prizes, Hebrew language instruction, symposia, and acquisition of library materials. Dr. Peter Haas, Abba Hillel Silver Chair of Religious Studies, serves as the Center's director.
