RUS 101: Beginning Russian I

Prerequisite:  none

This is an introductory course designed to equip students with fundamentals of the Russian language.   It is designed for students without previous knowledge of the language.  This course encompasses all five skills: reading, listening, grammar, writing, speaking/ discussion.  By the end of this course, students should be able to have a strong foundation to advance in to the next level of Russian courses.  In addition to learning the material from the required texts, students in this course learn about the Russian culture and society through videos, music, poems, short stories and visual art.

RUS 102: Beginning Russian II

Prerequisite:  RUS 101 or equivalent placement at the introductory level.

As a continuation of RUS 101, this course offers more extensive training in language fundamentals.  It enhances students' reading, listening, grammar, writing, speaking/ discussion skills through more advanced exercises.  Students continue sharpening their language skills and learning about the Russian culture through videos, short stories, news reviews, and songs.

RUS 201: Intermediate Russian I

Prerequisite:  RUS 101 and RUS 102 or equivalent placement at the intermediate level.

This course is a sequence for RUS 101 and RUS 102 and it is designed for students who want to continue with their in-depth learning of Russian.  It provides opportunities for extended conversation in Russian which helps students emphasize speaking skills.  This course encompasses reading, listening, grammar, writing and speaking/discussion skills.  Course materials consist of literary and non-literary texts and films that address a broad range of cultural topics.

RUS 202: Intermediate Russian II

Prerequisite:  RUS 201 or equivalent placement at the intermediate level.

This course is a continuation of RUS 201.  It further develops students' proficiency in the five languages skills through reading of cultural and literary texts, engagement in meaningful discussions, writing and composition, completion of grammar exercises, review of video/audio materials.  Students build a solid basis and competency for handling conversations, translations, and presentations in Russian.  As part of this course, students enrich their comprehension of the Russian language and Russian life through social, political, and economic news reviews, study of Russia's prominent individuals, and study of its history, economy and social structures.
