Admission Procedures and Instructions

Dear Applicant:

We are pleased to have you apply for the undergraduate program in Social Work at Creighton University.

You should apply to the Social Work  Program in your sophomore year after the completion of Introduction to Social Welfare (SWK 261), Introductory Psychology (PSY 111) and Introduction to Sociology: Self and Society (SOC 101). If you are taking these courses later than the first semester of your sophomore year, your application should be made during this semester.

To complete your application, we request that you submit the following materials to the Social Work Program, Creighton University, 2500 California Plaza, Omaha, NE 68178. Here is a checklist so you can keep track.

1. Application for declaration of the major in the Social Work Program. You will need to apply through both the Social Work Program and the College of Arts & Sciences.

2. Be interviewed by faculty. The interview is an essential part of the application process and admission into the Social Work Program. The purpose of the interview is to give the applicant an opportunity to demonstrate the values and aptitude necessary for social work. During the interview, applicants are evaluated in a variety of areas including motivation, communication skills, critical thinking, decision-making abilities, knowledge of the social work profession and issues affecting the society. The applicants are interviewed by two faculty of the Social Work Program. Each interview lasts approximately 30-45 minutes. Please complete the Program Admission Assessment and submit to program assistant prior to your interview.

3. Three letters of reference from professional and/or academic persons, excluding friends and relatives. Please use the form provided. Have each person return the completed reference form directly to the Social Work Program -ATTN: Angela Batson. The letters of reference required for admission ask the reviewer to comment on the following:

Student's capacity to make the transition from student to professional social worker?

  • What strengths does the student exhibit that will be useful in a helping profession?
  • What strengths does the student exhibit that will be useful in work with diverse populations?
  • Do you have any concerns regarding this student's ability to work with marginalized populations?

 

4. Obtain and read Admission, Advancement and Termination Policies. Sign and return to the Program of Social Work.

5. Obtain and sign the Social Work Program Manuals Form.  The form stipulates that you have read and understand the contents of the Student Handbook and the Practicum Manual.  

It is your responsibility to see that all materials (including references) are sent to us. After all the materials are in, admissibility will be determined and a letter of acceptance  sent to you. If you have any questions, please contact the Program of Social Work at 280-2079.
