Counseling Services at Creighton University is where students can find understanding, acceptance, practical help and treatment to help them handle day-to-day challenges and encourage their personal growth and development.

Most students come to Counseling Services for assistance with some identifiable concern.  Some typical concerns include self esteem issues, relationships, stress and anxiety, loneliness, depression, eating disorders and alcohol or drug abuse.  We offers assessment and psychological evaluation for academic success difficulties and mental health issues.  Couples and family therapy are also available when appropriate.

Counseling Services is staffed by two licensed psychologists, two provisionally-licensed psychologists, two licensed mental health practitioners,  two pre-doctoral psychology interns and practicum student(s) who provide services on an individual and group basis at no additional cost to students enrolled at Creighton University. More information about our staff is provided on our staff page.

Appointments

Counseling sessions are provided mainly by appointment. To make an appointment, you may visit the Counseling Services in the Harper Center, Room 1034 or call 280-2735.  Once an appointment is made, it is important to keep it or make arrangements to reschedule or cancel.  Students are asked to arrive for their first appointment approximately 10 minutes early in order to fill out necessary intake information. During this session, a counselor will listen to your concerns and determine which resources at Counseling Services or elsewhere will best suit your needs.

Upon request, arrangements can be made for appointments to be held at a location on campus that is accessible for someone with a physical/mobility disability.

About Counseling Sessions

Individual counseling sessions are typically last 50 minutes.  Counseling can be an opportunity to talk about issues that are of concern to students with an objective person who can help them develop skills and view situations in ways that may enable them to be more effective in managing life's challenges down the road.

Confidentiality

Effective mental health and counseling work requires an atmosphere of privacy and mutual trust.  We feel it is important to discuss the issues of privacy and confidentiality at the beginning of services here so that a positive working relationship can be developed.

Counseling Services takes every reasonable precaution to protect your privacy and acts in accord with professional, legal, and ethical guidelines established by the American Psychological Association for psychologists and the American Counseling Association for counselors.  Counseling Services maintains records of counseling sessions, assessments, and other professional contacts.  Theses records are restricted to the internal use of the Counseling Services' professional staff.  The records are kept in locked files in a secure, locked room within the Center for Health and Counseling.  Appointments are scheduled on the computer using a software program that is secure and protected by passwords.

This means that visits to Counseling Services are not part of a student’s academic record. Confidentiality is strictly followed.  Written or verbal information regarding your contacts with Counseling Services is released only with your written permission.   However, confidentiality is not guaranteed in the following unusual circumstances:  Situations involving imminent harm to yourself or others’ abuse of vulnerable individuals such as children or elders; certain legal situations (for example subpoena of records, clients’ use of mental condition as a legal defense).  If possible, the professional staff will discuss the procedures for this with you and enlist your assistance in resolution of the situation that has necessitated such a disclosure.

You are entitled to know if the professional staff you are seeing is receiving clinical supervision and by whom.  You may request to meet with the supervisor and/or the director of Counseling Services at any time.  Confidential information about your counseling will be shared as part of clinical supervision for the purpose of training, licensure laws and quality assurance.  Be assured that information about you does not go beyond these staff supervisory relationships, without your express, written permission.

Limitations of Our Services

On occasion a student may have needs that are beyond what Counseling Services is designed to offer. In such instances, our staff will facilitate obtaining appropriate treatment for the student.
