Frequently Asked Questions
The following is provided as a helpful guide for Creighton Students.
Q: Where is Health Services located?
A: Health Services is located within the Center for Health and Counseling, Suite 1034 of the Harper Center. Health Services is on the Campus Shuttle Route.
Q: Do I have to make an appointment at Health Services?
A: Yes. Appointments can be made by calling 280-2735. Please give the receptionist a brief description of what you need to be seen for so that you will be scheduled in the appropriate time slot. Your visit time will include time to update paperwork while you are in our office. You will need to wait 15 minutes after receiving an immunization
Q: Do I have to be on Creighton University’s endorsed Insurance Plan to receive services at Health Services?
A: No. Any Creighton University student can make an appointment and be seen at Health Services. You need to bring your insurance card so we can submit any charges directly to your insurance carrier for you.
Q: Can my parents or professors receive information about my visit to Student Health Services?
A: No. The identity of those using Health Services, as well as medical information is confidential.
See Notice of Health Services Privacy Practices. However, there are three exceptions:
1. When a patient (student) signs an Authorization for Release of Health Information giving the medical provider permission to discuss the visit with designated party or parties, usually parents.
2. If the medical provider determines there is a clear and imminent danger to the patient (student) and/or society.
3. If a Health Sciences student does not meet immunization requirements for clinical practice, their school will be notified.
Q: Who will provide services for patients (students) at Health Services?
A: Please view our list of Health Services staff
Q: Can I receive medications for my illness over the telephone?
A: No. We appreciate that you are busy. However, it is in your best interest to be seen by a medical provider. It is important to gather a history; conduct a physical examination and if appropriate order laboratory/X-rays to ensure you are diagnosed and treated correctly.
Q: Where can I get a prescription filled?
A: You can get a prescription filled at any pharmacy in Omaha, and there are literally hundreds. The closest pharmacy to the campus is:
Creighton Family Pharmacy
Located on the 1st floor of
Creighton University Medical Center (CUMC)
601 North 30th
(402) 449-4560
The Outpatient Pharmacy at CUMC is opened Monday—Friday 8:30am-6:00 pm. This pharmacy does offer a discount on prescriptions filled for our students with a current student ID. Most other pharmacies have later hours and are opened on weekends however; they do not offer a discount to students and are a short driving distance from campus.
Q: Does Health Services prescribe birth control?
A: Creighton University Health Services does not provide/prescribe birth control devices or contraceptives.
Q: How can I pay for vaccinations at Health Services?
A: Health Services accepts cash, credit cards or a personal check. We are unable to charge services directly to your business office account. If you know that your insurance will cover these services, we will bill them directly.
Q: How and when do I get updated vaccination information to the Health Services office?
A: Please visit our "Immunization Tracker" at (http://thenest.creighton.edu), log in to your nest account, and add newly received immunizations to your immunization history in our "Immunization Tracker”. Your compliance with University requirements is related to your ability to register for classes and participate in clinical activities.
You need to provide documentation to our department whenever new vaccines are received. This is the only way we can assure you are in compliance with the University requirements. Failing to provide new information to our department may result in a delay when registering for a class. As a Health Science Student, you are required to maintain certain vaccination requirements and if not provided may lead to a delay in your clinical rotations. See Immunization Requirements for Health Science Students
Q: What about the insurance requirements? I already have insurance and I don’t need the University plan. How do I waive the insurance so I am not charged for the premium? Will I need to do this every semester?
A: It is a Creighton University requirement that all full-time students carry a comprehensive health insurance policy. You will automatically be enrolled into the University plan and it will be charged on your Business Office statement. To avoid this charge, the waiver process must be completed. Go to http://www.aetnastudenthealth.com/stu_conn/student_connection.aspx?groupID=812848. This process must be completed each academic year. If you have questions regarding this procedure please call us at 402-280-2735. For specific questions on the insurance plan, please call the insurance company directly at 1-877-434-2913. An insurance representative familiar with the Creighton University plan will answer your call.
Q: Are there any special vaccinations I should know about?
A: You are encouraged to discuss the following vaccines with your personal health care provider. We strongly recommend them and they are available in our office.
Gardasil (females only)
Meningococcal Meningitis vaccine
Tdap
