Graduate Level Practicum

The practicum program at Creighton University?s Counseling Services provides graduate students with the training necessary to become competent, professional, and ethically aware mental health providers. Practicum students will gain valuable experience that builds on their prior academic training through the provision of services to college and professional students. Practicum students will provide services addressing a wide range of psychosocial, emotional, academic, vocational, and developmental issues.

Practicum students who complete a field placement at Counseling Services have the opportunity to conduct intake interviews, to provide individual and group therapy, to develop and present outreach programs, and to participate in staff meetings, didactic trainings, and case conferences. Trainees are expected to work two days a week and carry a case load of up to eight clients per week. Supervision is provided by a licensed psychologist on staff, as well as by predoctoral interns, with informal consultation with all staff members available as needed. The practicum placement is a nine month, part-time position which runs from August - May.

Our training program is tailored to the individual needs of practicum students based on the student?s professional preparation, prior experiences, interests, abilities and goals.  Practicum students are encouraged to develop professional goals, specific to their individual learning requirements.  Expectations will also be developed for the supervisory experience in a collaborative effort between the practicum student and the supervisor.

Students interested in completing a practicum at Counseling Services are required to complete a Practicum Application. Practicum student training is coordinated by Rebecka Tompkins, PsyD.  For more information, email
