Spirit of Creighton Award

Characteristics of a Jesuit Education

  • Magis: Literally translated “more.” This is the challenge to strive for excellence.
  • Women & Men for and with Others: Sharing gifts, pursuing justice, and having concern for the poor and marginalized.
  • Cura Personalis: “Care for the individual person.” Respecting each person as a child of God and all of God’s creations.
  • Unity of Heart, Mind, & Soul: Developing the whole person. Integrating all aspects of our lives.
  • Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (AMDG): “For the Greater Glory of God.”
  • Forming & Educating Agents of Change: Teaching behaviors that reflect critical thought and responsible action on moral and ethical issues.

About the Award

The Spirit of Creighton Award is the highest student award presented by the University. It is a citation conferred on an undergraduate and/or graduate/professional student by the President of the University annually at the May Commencement exercises.

Any faculty member, administrator, or staff member at the University may submit a nomination. The criteria upon which you should base your judgment are contained in the wording, which appears on the award itself:

“Whereas, the Founders of Creighton University, Edward and Mary Lucretia Creighton and John and Sarah Emily Wareham Creighton, were leaders of remarkable initiative and enterprise, of wisdom in action and modesty in achievement, of great personal sacrifice and spiritual formation for the good of others, for which they gave of their time and their resources generously and tirelessly; and in them these qualities were enveloped in the gracious spirit of American individuals who reverenced God. The honor of the award furthers Creighton University’s Jesuit, Catholic tradition: Excellent, purposeful higher education that produces women and men who are committed to service and are empowered to examine, engage and change the world.”
