Pre-Dental Summer Enrichment Program for Native American Students - Summer 2010

 

Program Description

 

The Creighton University School of Dentistry Summer Enrichment Program for Native American students is for six (6) high school seniors or undergraduate college students who are interested in a career as a dentist.  The program is held from Monday, June 21, 2010 to Friday, July 16, 2010.

The 4-week summer program provides an opportunity for Native American students to:

  • Learn about a career in dentistry
  • Participate in clinics, labs and classes in a dental school environment
  • Prepare for admission to dental school
  • Learn about financial aid for dental school

Eligibility

 

  • Only tribally-enrollment Native American high school or undergraduate students with strong cultural and tribal affiliation are eligible.
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or higher.
  • Complete the Pre-Dental Summer Enrichment Program application and Personal Statement
  • Students accepted will need to provide documentation of 2 doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination.


Curriculum

 

The 4-week program will include classes and labs in:

  • Basic Sciences – Histology and Anatomy
  • Dental Sciences – Operative Dentistry, Endodontics, Orthodontics and Radiology
  • Dental School Clinic Assisting and Observation – Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Operative Dentistry and Oral Diagnosis
  • Research – Dental Materials Project
  • Community Health Center Dental Clinic Observation – Fred LeRoy Health and Wellness Center, One World Community Health Center and Douglas County Health Department
  • Computers in Dentistry
  • Mock Interviews for Admission to Dental School

 

Activities

 

There is time scheduled for visits to local attractions such as the Henry Doorly Zoo, College World Series and the Old Market.

 

Tuition and Fees

 

  • All tuition, transportation and housing is paid for by Creighton University and by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation*
  • Students live in dorms on the Creighton University campus throughout the entire program.  Meals are provided each day.
  • Transportation costs include travel to and from Creighton University.
