Anti-virus FAQ
Q: Why did Creighton stop providing free anti-virus software for personal property?
A: We were concerned that we were no longer providing a quality service to the customer and maybe even providing a false sense of security. Over the years we offered a product that was very hard to maintain on property DoIT does not manage. As such, the quality of protection continued to erode. We had old versions (version 8, various levels of version 10) for which we had no good way of communicating to users that they needed to change. If you couple that with the fact that other, better, free products had become available and it was time to alter our approach.
Q: I’m using the anti-virus you provided on a system I own. What should I do?
A: The software we provided is probably still updating and providing some degree of protection, but we are urging people to uninstall the software we provided and find another solution that fits. Any of the examples above are sound choices.
Q: The computer I bought came with anti-virus software. Isn’t that good enough?
A: It’s probably fine to start with. What is critical is that your AV software is updating automatically (the more frequent your system checks for updates the better) from the manufacturer. The AV software that came with your system is probably on a timer. When time runs out you should be notified by the software that you need to renew for a price. Be sure to take action when your system alerts you about updating and possibly renewing your protection subscription.
