Bluejay Services Retirement

Bluejay is a Unix computer that for many years was the primary e-mail system on campus. It served e-mail to the public using software such as Pine, Webmail and POP. It is also how many people access web space both personal and departmental.

Why were these services retired?

There were a host of reasons for this decision including the age of the hardware and functionality of the software, but one major thrust was the goal of making CUmail the official communication tool of Creighton University (policy number 2.1.22). With the implementation of CUmail Creighton now has a state of the art e-mail system that offers a 21st century feature set for both users and system administrators. Web space has also been re-organized and Bluejay no longer had a good fit in the plan for allocating and managing web space.

When did Bluejay stop providing these services?

On December 1st, 2005, Bluejay stopped serving mailboxes. Programs such as Pine, Webmail and POP mailers (Eudora, Outlook Express, Pegasus, etc.) no longer function in regards to Bluejay. Remaining accounts on Bluejay will be deleted without further notice, as multiple attempts have been made to contact remaining account holders.

Personal web space also ceased to be accessible at that time. Access to departmental web pages still resident there will still be allowed.

How is web page access affected?

Personal pages have been migrated to the new People server. Persons with personal pages were contacted regarding moving.

Departmental and organizational pages will remain on Bluejay for the foreseeable future, and the accounts of the page owners will still be allowed access.
