Mapping a Network Drive on Mac OS X

Windows users are always "mapping network drives" to connect to servers with Departmental or University resources. Due to Mac OS X's Unix underpinnings, you can do this, too, using a protocal referred to as "Samba." The directions are listed below.

From the Mac OS X Finder, select the Go menu and choose Connect to Server...

In the Address: field, type in the network path of the server or computer. Here are some examples:

smb://albatross/doit
smb://people/abc12345 <-- use your NetID instead of abc12345
smb://puffin/username

Click on the Connect button

Depending on the server, if you are requested to provide authentication information, enter the following:

Workgroup/Domain: BLUE
Username: your NetID
Password: your BLUE Password

After authentication is complete, the mapped drive will appear on your desktop where you can interact with it like any other folder on your hard drive.
