In the course of the last few years, many on this campus have encountered viruses. Some have escaped relatively unscathed, but for many, it proved to be more devastating. They lost hours, days, reconstructing computers. Then more hours recreating their work, their classes. Then finally, more time trying to determine whether sanity was now a lost cause...
When a virus is encountered, it has an effect beyond the computer it has infected. It causes e-mail to slow down as well as access to the internet. It also can tie up the Help Desk. These issues affect everyone on campus.
For that reason, Postini has been implemented on campus. Postini is an e-mail filter used to "launder" your e-mail. It sifts through, sorting out suspicious e-mail and quarantines it. (Suspicious e-mail is that which appears to be either "junk" mail or mail containing a virus.)
The first step is to understand some of the basics.
