Glossary

BLUE-Active Directory: A directory service from Microsoft Corporation, that also integrates with the user organization’s DNS (Domain Name System) structure.

Encryption: To alter (a file, for example) using a secret code so as to be unintelligible to unauthorized parties.

Gateway: A deprecated term for a device that enables data to flow between different network.

Host: A computer containing data or programs that another computer can access by means of a network or modem.

NetID: This is the ID assigned to any Creighton employee or student. This ID consists of three characters followed by five numeric digits.

Network: A system of computers interconnected by telephone wires or other means in order to share information.

Security: the protective measure or controls prescribed to safeguard a system.

Server: a computer in a network that is used to provided services (as access to files or shared peripherals or the routing of email) to other computers in the network.

VPN-Virtual Private Network: is a connection that is established over an existing ‘public’ network using encryption or authentication to secure its Payload.
