What to Expect

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

You will need the approval of your department chair, so please have a discussion on how you plan to cover the other courses in your teaching load while you are in the Dominican Republic.

Creighton University is committed to ensuring that all faculty participating in this immersion and study abroad experience are well prepared for traveling and offering their courses in the unique setting of the Dominican Republic. Faculty members who are selected to teach a course will be provided with a pre-departure checklist and arrival guide providing detailed information and deadlines on travel reservations, immunizations, insurance and other preparations from the Global Engagement office. You must make sure that you have a U.S. Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of you designated time in the Dominican Republic.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE TO THE DR:

  • An Encuentro representative will meet you at the airport in Santiago, DR upon your arrival.
  • You will be introduced to the Encuentro faculty, staff, and students and the ILAC staff members in the main office.
  • You will receive your room key to your private casita for your stay at ILAC and given a tour of the ILAC facilities, including the classroom areas.
  • Encuentro staff will make arrangements with you to exchange money or visit an ATM for spending cash.
  • Meet the Encuentro students! You will be informed of any student/academic trips that are taking place during your time in the DR - you are welcome to join!

WHEN YOU LEAVE THE DR:

  • Please return room keys to the ILAC office.
  • You are welcome to purchase items from the ILAC gift store or elsewhere in Santiago to take back with you. The coffee, local art, ILAC t-shirts or hats, and handmade candles all make great gifts.
  • Make sure you have coordinated your travel to the airport with Encuentro staff.

AFTER YOU HAVE RETURNED TO OMAHA:

  • Tell your story to your students and help promote Encuentro Dominicano to interested students!
  • Counsel students who have expressed an interest in Encuentro.
  • Remind your colleagues during registration of the Encuentro Program so they can advise students on the different elements of the program.
  • Participate in activities such as the re-entry retreat for students scheduled early on in the semester after students return to Omaha.
  • Encourage other faculty to apply to teach in the program!
