Chester Ashong
Here is your chance to meet Chester Nii-Bannor Ashong, or Chet. Chester is a junior/first-year pharmacy student from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. His parents moved to Oklahoma City from Ghana, Africa. Believe it or not, Chester was born on Valentine’s Day!
Ches is also a recipient of both the Gates Millennium Scholarship and the Creighton University Diversity Scholarship. He joined Student Support Services in order to get some assistance in adjusting to college life. “Everyone is so helpful, nice, and willing to stop what they are doing to help me.” According to Chester, some of the benefits of being part of SSS involve keeping him accountable and involved in events that occur around campus.
Aside from SSS, Chester has quite a list of involvement activities around and off campus. Some of Chester’s accomplishments include being on the Dean’s Honor’s Roll and being a Diversity Scholar and a Gates Millennium Scholar. He is a member of the American Pharmacy Association- Academy of Student Pharmacists and works at the Creighton University Medical Center as a pharmacy technician. He hopes to get involved with a research project through the pharmacy school this summer.
He had many memorable experiences at Creighton. When asked what the most interesting thing that has happened to him in the classroom at Creighton, he said “One of my philosophy professors started to call me Charles, and a different philosophy professor started to call me Hector!” He considers Dr. Stephen Gross as his favorite professor because “he was one of the most helpful, accessible professors I have had at Creighton.”
Chester loves playing video games to relax or hanging out with his buddies. His most prized procession is his Bible because it continually provides him with wisdom.
His advice to others comes from one of his favorite quotes by tennis player, Arthur Ashe: “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.”
