Getting a federal tax return transcript

If you are selected for verification, the US Department of Education requires that your IRS tax return transcript be submitted to the financial aid office rather than copies of the 1040 tax return. To request a tax return transcript, go here. You will have 2 choices: request a tax return transcript that is immediately downloaded to your computer, or have it mailed to you.

IRS Data Retrieval option

If you agreed to the data match ( IRS Data Retrieval process) with the IRS when you completed your FAFSA, and the match was successfully completed, you don't need to send us the tax return transcript. We recommend that you use the Data Retrieval tool. It is easier and faster. (Not all filers are eligible to use the Data Retrieval.) Go here for more information.

Also, if you completed your FAFSA before you submitted your taxes, you can go back to your online FAFSA and do a correction to retrieve and link your tax return to your FAFSA. Do this about 2 weeks after you have filed electronically or 8 weeks after you have submitted a paper tax return.
