Students Give Time, Talent and Treasure

During the blustery days of mid-November, students were anxiously awaiting Thanksgiving break. But before taking off for the holiday, 125 Creighton students welcomed in the season of giving by paying it forward during the Student Philanthropy Committee’s Invest in the Nest Week.

“Pay it forward’ is by far the most popular phrase when we are asking for gifts,” said Leslie Wyckoff of Wichita, Kan., a junior with a major in health administration policy and a minor in business.

“Creighton instills the Jesuit values in us, so there is an expectation among Creighton students that we should always give back. Commonly students do that with their time, but our goal is to help students realize that the University is worthy of our philanthropy as well.”

During the weeklong campaign, the 50 members of the Student Philanthropy Committee took turns sitting at tables across campus to get the word out about the opportunity to “Invest in the Nest.”

“Being an alumna of Creighton myself, it shouldn’t surprise me that Creighton students are so selfless and philanthropic-minded, but these students have truly impressed me,” said Lizz Wininger Abrahams, BSBA’06, MBA’09, assistant director of Student and Recent Alumni Giving.  “Since the committee started two years ago we’ve had 380 students give to the Creighton Fund, raising more than $3,085.  These students are passionate about Creighton and want to make a difference today.”

Earlier in the semester, the committee asked Creighton students to write thank-you notes to Creighton donors during the annual CU Thanks Week; donors received 880 thank-you notes from students.

“Students are sincerely grateful for their Creighton education,” Abrahams said. “This is their chance to share their gratitude with the people that make it possible. It also encourages students to reflect on their experiences at Creighton.”

The goal of the Student Philanthropy Committee, according to Abrahams and Wyckoff, is to nurture in current students the importance of giving to Creighton. “Our intention with student giving is not to raise large amounts of money but rather to encourage lifelong giving,” Wyckoff said.

“These students are making a difference now. Alumni who began giving as students will likely increase their giving as they are able and they are vital to the future of Creighton University.”
