Current Projects
As of January 25, 2009, the GSG Service Committee is working to:
- focus on Environmental, Educational Outreach, and Food Pantry types of service projects.
- increase communication with graduate students about already existing service opportunities, primarily those facilitated by the Creighton Center for Service and Justice (CCSJ).
- formulate student-led teams for Relay for Life.
- establish a semester-long service partnership for Fall 2009.
Graduate/Professional Student Spring Break Service Trip (SBST):
GSG invites you and encourages you to participate in Spring Break Service Trips, which will provide you with growth, wisdom, and memories that are sure to last a life time.
The Creighton Center for Service & Justice (CCSJ) has been facilitating service trips over spring break since 1983. Many alumni hail SBST as the one "must-have" experience at Creighton. 2009 marked the first ever Graduate and Professional Student Spring Break Service Trip. Our team of graduate and professional students traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to work with Cap Corps. Some components of the trip included:
- eating with the guests of St. Ben's Community Meal
- spending a day at Repairers of the Breach (a drop-in center that is organized and run by people who use the services they provide)
- visiting with Voces de la Frontera (an immigrant rights group that is working to bring about justice for immigrants)
- learning about alternative ways of living by visiting Growing Power (an urban farm that emphasizes the economic and environmental impact of local food systems and sustainable agriculture)
- working at the Catholic Worker house (emphasizes direct service to the poor while simultaneously challenging war and the violence of poverty by taking direct action)
