Maggie Baker

Hometown: Sioux Falls, SD
Program of study: JD/MBA Dual Degree Program

What made you decide to pursue education in this program? As an undergraduatestudent at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I majored in economics and was interested in a career in banking. I interned at The First National Bank in Sioux Falls for two summers, and I was advised that a Law degree would be really helpful to anyone looking to go into bank management because of the quickly changing banking regulations.  I had always known I wanted to pursue a MBA, but this internship really opened my mind to the possibility of law school in my future.

Why did you choose Creighton? Once I decided to pursue law school, I began looking for dual JD/MBA programs. Creighton provided the perfect dual program – one that can be accomplished in three years. Also, both the Law and MBA programs separately are great programs with intricate alumni networks for anyone interested in practicing or working in Nebraska or the Midwest. I was excited to move to Omaha and have loved every minute here.

What are your interests outside of graduate school? Outside of graduate school I really like running, reading for pleasure, traveling, and spending time with my family and friends. In October, I participated in the Market to Market Relay and ran 11 miles as a member of an 8-person team running from the Omaha Old Market to the Lincoln Haymarket (86 total miles) all in one day!

What experiences at Creighton have best prepared you for life after college? Creighton has provided me with endless networking opportunities through both the MBA and Law programs. I have had the opportunity to visit several law firms and meet several local business leaders. I also have a mentor through the law school that is always available to answer any questions I may have. This ability to meet and get to know successful Omaha businessmen and attorneys has armed me with the tools I need to find a job after graduate school as well as the connections to remain successful in my career.

What is your most memorable experience at Creighton? My most memorable experience is working on a group project for an MBA marketing class. We had to come up with a marketing plan for Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, and thus our group was given free passes to go experience all the fun activities Vala’s has to offer. As I am not from Omaha, I had never been there before, but we had an absolute blast! I also have very fond memories of every Creighton basketball game I have attended!

What is one thing that you have accomplished that makes you proud? This semester, I helped as a research assistant for the first year law class. I really enjoyed answering questions ranging from the class activities, to studying for other classes, to balancing life and law school in general. I was proud that the 1Ls felt comfortable approaching me with their issues because the first year of law school can be a very challenging and overwhelming endeavor.

What have you most enjoyed about your experience at Creighton? I have really enjoyed the community present at Creighton. All the teachers and faculty members are incredibly invested in seeing the success of their students. Also, I have learned that the Creighton connection exists far beyond graduation. Creighton alumi exhibit so much pride in the school and interest in current students, which has created a very meaningful and enjoyable experience for me.

Are you involved in any community service activities? If so please specify. Each Thanksgiving my mom and I bake pumpkin and pecan pies for the Sioux Falls food banquet, to provide part of a Thanksgiving meal to those in need. Also, this Christmas I was able to participate in the Creighton Law School Angel Tree and purchased presents for Omaha children through the Salvation Army.
