John-Paul Gurnett

Hometown: Omaha, NE
Program of study: Masters in Elementary Education

Why did you choose Creighton? I attended Creighton for my undergraduate career where I received a Bachelors of Arts in Theatre performance. Being from the Omaha area, I was always aware of the quality of education that Creighton provided. As I began looking for graduate programs, Creighton remained the best fit for me.

What made you decide to pursue education in this program? During my undergraduate career, I began working for Camp Fire USA (now Completely Kids), a non-profit organization that specializes in working with at risk youth and families. What started as a part-time job in college, turned into a passion for working with the community and promoting social justice. I realized that I had a talent for working with youth and decided that education would be the best fit for my talents. I chose the program at Creighton because I strongly believe in the Jesuit education. The Masters in Elementary Education program at Creighton not only prepares the student to not only be an effective teacher but a compassionate one.

What are your interests outside of graduate school?  When not in school I am involved with community theatre. I have performed in shows at the Blue Barn theatre and at other theatres throughout the city. I also enjoy going to concerts and finding the local karaoke hotspots on the weekends.

What experiences at Creighton have best prepared you for life after Creighton? My student teaching experience at Liberty Elementary has prepared me to walk into a classroom as soon as possible. Under the direction of a Creighton supervisor and the guidance of an amazing faculty I have had great guidance during what can be a challenging time. Creighton also educates the whole person and builds within the student the want and desire to bring about change within the world.

What is your most memorable experience at Creighton? My most memorable experience at Creighton will always be performing on the Lied Education Center stage. I can vividly remember each and every performance I was apart of and how each one helped me advance my talents.

What is one thing that you have accomplished that makes you proud? I am most proud of being a first generation college student and achieving not only my bachelors, but also my master's degree by the age of 24.

What have you most enjoyed about your experience at Creighton? I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with amazing professors and fellow students who have taught me important lessons along the way. I do believe that a Creighton education is one that changes the whole person. I am leaving the university with an awareness of my own talents and an awareness of how I can effectively utilize those talents in today's world.

Are you involved in any community service activities? I continue to work with Completely Kids in the after school program and help in any additional ways possible at Liberty.
