Program of study: EdD in Leadership
Why did you choose Creighton? I chose Creighton because I wanted the combined strength of an academically challenging program with the reflection of a Jesuit institution. Other programs may have had an emphasis on one or the other, but only Creighton combined them in a way that I found meaningful on both a personal and professional basis.
What made you decide to pursue education in this program? I've always been interested in leadership and have enjoyed the many different professional leadership challenges that I've faced (even ones that left me curled up on the floor crying!). The EdD program in Leadership will expand my leadership portfolio and position me for the next thirty years of wherever my career takes me.
What are your interests outside of graduate school? I enjoy gardening and can waste a great deal of time removing my lawn as I replace it with perennial beds. I'll admit I may be motivated by a desire to eventually reach the point where I can sell the lawn mover at a garage sale.
What experiences at Creighton have best prepared you for life after Creighton? I'm still at Creighton (certainly for the rest of this program) but I've already enjoyed the experience of being able to tie something that I learned in class, or from one of my cohort, to a daily business leadership challenge.
What is your most memorable experience at Creighton? I really enjoyed last year getting together as a cohort in Omaha. It was a wonderful experience to meet other adult learners and benefit from the broad spectrum of perspective that we brought to the program.
What is one thing that you have accomplished that makes you proud? I've raised two kids as a single Dad. One has graduated from college and one has a year to go. I've very proud of both of them. On the personal side, I've been to 49 of the 50 states on business! It may not make me proud, but it certainly makes me a curiosity. By the way, I've never been to Mississippi.
What have you most enjoyed about your experience at Creighton? Creighton does a very good job at integrating the introspective role that adult learners have in understanding material with the extrovert role we have as practitioners. Each and every day I have an opportunity to apply something that I have learned in class.
Are you involved in any community service activities? I'm involved in a number of board activities. I serve on the University of Minnesota Cancer Center's board, the Twin Cities Public Television Citizen Advisory Council and I'm in the process of joining the board of Catholic Charities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
