Learning Community

Once each semester, a virtual meeting of all members of the cohort will be conducted. Participants will share their experiences, have an opportunity to share how they have used information from course work in the performance of position responsibilities, compare the preparation of their portfolios, discuss the process they are using to prepare the dissertation proposal, share information about job opportunities or new responsibility they have been given, and any other topics appropriate to the cohort. This is an excellent opportunity to share across the areas of business, education and health to emphasize the interdisciplinary aspect of the program. In addition, the Program Director or advisors will be able to share information about the program and its progress. 

These relationships within the learning community will continue to be important as the student progresses through the program. The philosophy and mission of the interdisciplinary Doctorate of Education Program in Leadership will be presented. The learning outcomes and expectations will be presented along with a review of the program requirements. A step by step explanation of how students will move through the program will assist students to understand the requirements and how to navigate the program successfully. Attention will be given to distance education via online classes and students will learn how classes are formatted and delivered. A leader-scholar community has been described as a signature pedagogy for applied doctoral programs. In this model, learning and advising is focused on collaboration and practice as the members of the community provide mutual support intellectually, practically and socially (Olson & Clark, 2009).  

Activities are continously planned to involve faculty in the program both professionally and also socially. Each student has an opportunity to meet individually with their advisor. Upon acceptance into the program, students are advised they need to complete the Gallup StrengthsQuest Inventory and bring their leadership profile with them for advising purposes. Students and advisors working together develop an Individualized Professional Development Plan (IPDP) where professional and personal goals are identified and plans are made to assist the student in meeting each of the goals/objectives.
