The Master of Arts in Theology program has been designed to address the needs of educators, pastors, and lay leaders of the Christian churches as well as those seeking personal theological enrichment. The program of studies provides a broad overview of the major areas of contemporary theology while also permitting a degree of concentration in one area of theology chosen by the student. Duration: Currently designed for part-time students, the program schedules courses in evenings during the academic year.

Number of Credits Required: 27-33

Cost: $365 per credit hour (2012/2013 rate) - this is the 50% reduced rate, plus university and technology fees.

Financial Aid/Scholarships:

  • University tuition reduction: The University offers a 50% tuition reduction for any student engaged in full-time or part-time ministry, paid or volunteer, lay or ordained. Ministry Scholarship Form
  • Bishop John R. Sheets Scholarship for the M.A. in Theology:
    Students with demonstrated financial need and potential for excellence in study and ministry are eligible for a 10-25% tuition reduction. Sheets Scholarship Form
  • Richard J. Hauser, S.J., Endowed Scholarship: Offers a tuition reduction up to 25% Hauser Scholarship Form

Application

Application Deadlines: Please submit all application materials to the Graduate School

The deadlines for those students interested in either the Sheets or Hauser Scholarship are as follows:

  • April 1 - for admission to summer classes
  • June 1 - for admission to fall classes
  • November 1 - for admission to spring classes

The final deadline for all students is as follows (Note: This deadline will still allow students to be eligible for the Ministry scholarship of a 50% tuition reduction):

  • May 1 - for admission to summer classes
  • August 1 - for admission to fall classes
  • December 1 - for admission to spring classes 

Admissions Requirements:

  • Earned Bachelor's degree with 3.0 cumulative grade point average
  • 9 credit hours of Theology (Those applicants who have not taken 9 hours of theology can be admitted on a probationary status, which means that the student will have to take three courses (i.e. 9 credit hours) in Creighton's University College and earn a grade of B or higher in the three courses).
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores of at least 153 on the verbal section of the exam. Applicants can be admitted on probationary status for GRE scores from 149-152.

An application should include:

  • Completed application form and $50 non-refundable application fee
  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • Three recommendations (at least two of these must be from professors who have taught you)
  • Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • All students whose native language is not English must demonstrate competence in English with a score of 100 on the computer-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or 80 on the paper-based at the graduate level. Decisions on admission to the M.A. in Theology program are not made until TOEFL scores have been submitted.
