Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) is a pipeline program for students from the sixth grade through 16 (college). The goal of the program is to shepherd economically and/or educationally disadvantaged students through educational activities designed to help prepare them for medical school and other health professions programs. Students will participate in programs designed to expose them to health professionals and role models in the health sciences, and to develop their academic skills in math and science.
The HCOP Program consists of varying components
• Pre-professional 6th-8th – Health Careers Club -
• Saturday Academy for 11th graders - 30 week program
• Summer Academy for 9-12 graders- 25 high school students are recruited to attend a 6 wk Summer Session targeting math and skills, ACT preparation, field trips, etc.)
• Mentoring, counseling program for 9th-11th graders that emphasizes math and science and a program for seniors that prepares them for college (50 students).
• Undergraduate component that offers counseling, mentoring and tutoring for college students interested in the Health Sciences
Creighton’s Pipeline to Success programs align with the Healthy People 2010 Objectives by increasing the number of well trained diverse health professionals who will provide culturally proficient care to the nation’s underserved. All students are exposed to and receive cultural competency awareness and training.
