Central Region NAMME Application

The National Association of Medical Minority Educators, Inc. (NAMME) was established in 1975 by a group of educators concerned about the shortage of minority health providers and the need to establish an organization to address important issues impacting underrepresented minority students, faculty and administrators in health professions schools.  All scholarships are made possible through the generosity of NAMME Central Region in an effort to expand the number of qualified, trained minority health care professionals in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

ELIGIBILITY
To be considered for the NAMME Central Region Scholarship, an applicant must:

1. Be nominated by a regular NAMME member in good fiscal standing;

2. Be an underrepresented ethnic minority
(Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American or SE Asian/ Pacific Islander)

3. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;

4. Be currently enrolled full time in an accredited health professional school or program, be in good academic standing, and completed at least his or her first professional year of training. Allied Health Profession (Health Sciences) students must be in their third (junior) year.

5. Undergraduate students must have a minimum grade point average of a 2.8
Professional school students must be in good academic standing at their institution

Professional Students Opportunities

AMA Foundation Scholarship Opportunities

The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation and the AMA Minority Affairs Consortium would like to notify your organization about a scholarship opportunity in which your constituents might be interested.  You are welcome to pass this information on to members of your organization. 

The Minority Scholars Award is presented annually to 10 medical students from minority groups historically underrepresented in the medical profession. The $10,000 awards are offered with support from the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative. 

The Minority Scholars Award recognizes personal commitment to improving minority health status, scholastic achievement and financial need among minority students. Eligible nominees are medical students from one of the following underrepresented minority groups: African American/Black, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino. Nominees must be a permanent resident or citizen of the Unites States in their first or second year at an accredited U.S. medical school.

Eligible candidates must be nominated by the medical school dean or dean’s designate. Each medical school may nominate up to two individuals for this award.  The AMA Foundation must then receive completed nomination forms no later than April 16.

Navy Financial Assistance Program (FAP)

As you know, residency is tough enough without financial worries.  Struggling to pay bills shouldn't distract your students from pursuing their passion for medicine.

Experience. Training. And at least $27,003 paid directly to students annually during a typical four-year residency - that's top of their normal salary.  Add it to a monthly stipend of at least $1,279 for up to 48 months.  That's more than $160,000 for living and expenses available through the Navy Financial Assistance Program. Money to cover everything from student loans, car payments, rent and family expenses.

To be eligible for the NAVY FAP, student must be:

  • Graduates of medical school or currently in medical school or accepted to an approved residency program
  • U.S. citizens
  • 34 years old or younger
  • Able to pass Navy physical standards
