For the 16^th straight year the Health Sciences Library is collecting Food for Fine$. For every dollar that is owed as late fees we are accepting one food item from now until December 19th. All donated food will in turn be donated to the Omaha Food Bank. Over the past years we have collected more than 300 food items/year over the month long drive and hope to top that this year. SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition and the ARL, Association of Research Libraries have prepared a detailed response to arguments submitted by the Association of American Publishers to the NIH, related to copyright law and international trade. Essentially the message from SPARC and ARL is that “the NIH Public Access Policy does not affect U.S. copyright law in any way.” Click on the link for more information.

Nature has issued a press release saying that they will deposit accepted manuscripts into PubMedCentral later in 2008. Additionally, they will extend the service to institutional repositories that comply with Nature's policies. EBSCOhost is now one of the most important tools for finding journal articles in many academic disciplines. Creighton Libraries now provide access to IPA—International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, CINAHL—Cumulated Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO and many other databases via EBSCOhost. EBSCOhost has an easy feature for directly exporting citations to Refworks or other bibliography management software. EBSCOhost is introducing a new interface this summer. You can watch this 6 minute EBSCOhost 2.0 tutorial to learn about the new features or take it for a test drive.

After more than a decade, WebSPIRS has reached its end of life and will no longer be available after June 30, 2008. The Health Sciences Library has migrated the databases that were provided via WebSPIRS to other vendor's interfaces, primarily EBSCOhost.

MEDLINE is now available at EBSCOhost or PubMed.

A new National Institutes of Health (NIH) clinical research program will aim to provide answers to patients with mysterious conditions that have long eluded diagnosis. Called the Undiagnosed Diseases Program, the trans-NIH initiative will focus on the most puzzling medical cases referred to the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. With the program infrastructure now in place, the program is ready to accept patients. For more information about the Undiagnosed Diseases Program, visit the NIH website. For approximately $25 the Office 2007 suite is available for the Work at Home license. Log in with your netid and password, fill out the online form, add the software to your shopping cart, and check out like any online storefront. The license allows Creighton employees and students to install Office on one personal computer at home and is NOT for university owned computers.

On December 26, 2007, President Bush signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 (H.R. 2764) which requires that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication. Previously this was requested, but was not required. This requirement goes into effect for all peer-reviewed articles accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008.

The Library would like to support faculty participation in this effort, by offering to assist in submitting manuscripts via the NIHMS System.
