The National Library of Medicine has created a new gateway for searching for clinical effectiveness studies and systematic reviews.

The reviews and review summaries now in PubMed Health account for perhaps one-third of the good quality systematic reviews published by public agencies and journals worldwide. Most of the remainder can be found in a PubMed “Clinical Queries” Systematic Reviews search which runs simultaneously with a PubMed Health search. Read more about PubMed Health.

Films on Demand videos are now available on Ipad/Ipod/Iphone. Their servers now automatically stream video to your computer or mobile device at the optimum rate for your connection. Pubmed will now bold your search terms in the results. Only your exact search term will be highlighted. If you search tumor necrosis factor, then TNF will not be bolded. To get both highlighted you would have to explicitly search for tumor necrosis factor OR TNF. You can control this setting in your MyNCBI account. The National Academies Press is now giving free access to all pdf ebooks on their site. This includes about 4000 books published by the National Academies—National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council. They are also planning to give access to all future books. The National Academies Press usually publishes about 200 books a year on science, engineering, and medical topics. These books are also listed in our eresource portal.

The Creighton University Health Sciences Library and Reinert-Alumni Library have jointly purchased the 2011 ScienceDirect Freedom Collection on a trial basis. For the rest of 2011, Creighton faculty, staff and students will have access to about 2000 journals, from 1995 to the present—almost everything published by Elsevier, covering subjects from accounting to zoology, with a few exceptions. As with other ScienceDirect titles, articles in these journals will be fully searchable and downloadable as PDFs or in HTML format. The journals in the Freedom Collection are listed in the CU Libraries’ e-resources portal (A-to-Z list). Unlike our regularly subscribed titles, however, they will only be accessible in years when we buy access to the collection, with no perpetual license. At the end of 2011, we will assess the level of use of these added titles and the available budget to decide whether to purchase the 2012 collection.

NLM has released “Embryo,” a new app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. Features include human fertilization videos, photo micrographs of early-stage embryo development, 2D and 3D digital images using visual stack dissections, and a pregnancy calculator.

Embryo is a collaboration of NLM, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD), the Virtual Human Embryo Project (Louisiana State University) and the National Museum of Health & Medicine’s Human Developmental Anatomy Center. Read more.

The library has received trial access to Drug Topics Red Book Online. This is one of the best sources of drug pricing information. Go to Micromedex 2.0 and choose the Red Book Online Trial tab. You can search for prescription or over the counter medications, nutraceuticals, bulk chemicals, medical devices or supplies by product name or manufacturer. The Micromedex Drug Interactions app is now in the iTunes app store. The app checks up to 50 drugs for interactions. The app is loaded in the memory of your device and does not require an internet connection. The password for this app is included in our institutional subscription to Micromedex 2.0. To get the app:

• Go to Micromedex 2.0
• Click on the Mobile tab at the top of the page
• Follow the instructions for the Drug Interactions app near the bottom

You will have to get a new password each quarter.

The Radiation Emergency Medical Management site was created by the National Library of Medicine and the Department of Health and Human Services to:

• Provide guidance for health care providers, primarily physicians, about clinical diagnosis and treatment of radiation injury during radiological and nuclear emergencies
• Provide just-in-time, evidence-based, usable information with sufficient background and context to make complex issues understandable to those without formal radiation medicine expertise
• Provide web-based information that is also downloadable in advance, so that it would be available during an emergency if the internet is not accessible

The National Institutes of Health has launched a new database for finding images within PubMed Central. The new database, called Images, provides access to approximately 3 million figures, graphs, photographs and illustrations from PubMed Central’s full-text digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. Images can be searched by keyword, author, journal, and PubMed ID number (PMID). Useful options for searching within a narrower field (e.g., the figure caption), or by size (e.g., pixel height or width) are also available. Developed and maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine, all content contained in the Images database is subject to the general copyright restrictions that apply to material available through the NCBI site. The library now has online access to the eighth edition of DeVita, Hellman, and Rosenberg's Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology. This edition has over 40 entirely new chapters and over 70 that have been rewritten. The text provides cutting-edge, practical information on the science of oncology and the multimodality treatment of every cancer type. To ensure a balanced, multidisciplinary approach, each major treatment chapter is co-authored by a surgeon, a medical oncologist, and a radiation oncologist. Treatment of each cancer type is discussed by stage, with coordinated guidelines on the role of each treatment modality at each stage. Each major treatment section is preceded by an updated brief chapter describing the molecular biology of the cancer and the implications of molecular biology for patient management. Full consideration is also given to cancer prevention, screening, palliative care, supportive oncology, and quality of life issues.
